A Congress leader from Rajasthan, India has forwarded claims about 10 Indian Merchant Navy sailors being stuck on a vessel anchored off a port in Northern Cyprus.

The ship has been in that state for over a month now. The leader also sought the immediate intervention of the Central Government to rescue the sailors.

According to a crew member family, the sailors are among the 13 crew members who aren’t allowed to disembark.

Charmesh Sharma, a Bundi-based Congress leader, stated that the owner of the vessel sold it to another firm and is also putting pressure on the crew to ship it to Libya. Sharma appealed the urgent intervention of the President, Prime Minister and the Ministry of External Affairs for the rescue of seafarers.

Sanjeev Singh Rathod, who hails from Udaipur in Rajasthan, is a sailor stuck in the ship. He recently connected with his wife through WhatsApp and narrated about the severe situations of the sailors. They are facing a threat to life amid illness caused by poor quality food and adverse conditions.

Singh’s wife Sweta stated that she talked with her husband on Saturday. The sailor told her that their mobile networks and internet connections would soon be blocked by port authorities.

She further stated that the authorities are putting pressure on the crew to port the ship in war-torn Libya and they are not permitted to disembark from the ship either.

The sailor’s wife regularly appealed for the concerned authorities to help them. However, she is yet to receive any response from them.
