Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC) Vikrant has returned after a five-day sea trial to test the performance of the 40,000-tonne warship. IAC Vikrant, manufactured at a cost of approximately ₹23,000 crores, set sail on 4 August from Kochi for crucial sea trials ahead of its planned inductions into the Indian Navy by August 2022.
On successfully completing its much-awaited trial, Vice Admiral AK Chawla has reportedly said that it is a historic moment for India.
The navy also added that the ship’s system parameters had proved satisfactory during the noteworthy trial. The ship’s performance, including main propulsion, hull, Power Generation, and Distribution (PGD), and its auxiliary equipment had been tested during this exercise.
The trials had been reviewed by AK Chawla, the Vice-Admiral, and Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief Southern Naval Command.
The aircraft carrier is about 262 meters long, 62 meters at its widest part. It comes with a height of 59 meters, including its superstructure. It boasts 14 decks with five in its superstructure.
The warship will deploy Kamov-31 helicopters, MiG-29K fighter jets, and MH-60R multi-role helicopters.
With Vikrant, India will be part of a select group of nations that can design and build an aircraft carrier indigenously. It is also expected to provide thrust to the ‘Make in India’ initiative designed by the Centre.
Delivery of the IAC would also be strengthening the country’s position in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) and enhance the nation’s quest for a blue-water Navy.
Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC) ‘Vikrant’ successfully accomplished maiden sea voyage today.
Trials progressed as planned.
