After 17 months, the first cruise ship has set sail for Mexico from California. The Carnival Panorama is the first cruise ship to set sail from California in 17 months during the ongoing pandemic. It will stop in the Mexican ports of Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas after a seven-day voyage before getting back to Long Beach.
The Carnival Panorama is on its seven-day voyage. It is expected to stop at the Mexican ports of Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas before heading back to Long Beach. The 1,060-foot vessel had made its debut in 2019. Bob Lechtreck, a guest, has said that he and his wife had attended the ship’s inaugural sailing on 11 December 2019.
He has expressed his excitement to be on the Panorama for its inaugural return to service. He also added that it has been long since they had sailed, and the couple couldn’t be happier returning to their favourite activity.
The cruise industry was one of the worst hit by the pandemic after several crew members and passengers had tested positive for Covid-19. Some vessels even had to turn away from ports. The industry has battled the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) over health requirements to resume sailing in the US waters.
The company has said that its protocols have exceeded CDC recommendations. They have had all employees vaccinated. They also mandate that all guests provide a negative test result for Covid-19.
Passengers must be vaccinated, but the company will also permit limited exemptions for those unable to get the vaccine, including children under 12 who are ineligible so far. Those who are unvaccinated will need to follow additional safety precautions, per Carnival’s Covid-19 protocols.
Last week on Carnival cruise, 27 individuals had tested positive for Covid-19 just before the vessel had stopped in Belize City. On Friday, the ship returned to Galveston, Texas, after stopping in Mexico.
About 26 crew members tested positive besides one guest on the Carnival Vista, which had been carrying more than 1,400 crew and about 3,000 passengers, the Belize Tourism Board said in a statement.
All 27 had been vaccinated. They were mostly asymptomatic. Only some had mild symptoms. All had been in isolation. The country’s tourism board has said that 99.9% of the ship’s crew had been fully vaccinated. It also added that more than 96% of its passengers had been fully vaccinated as well.
