Hyundai Mipo delivers Korea's first LNG-powered ro-ro

On the 8th October, Hyundai Mipo Dockyard delivered the ‘FAUSTINE’, a 20,000-ton LNG-powered ro-ro ship, to ‘CldN’ of Luxembourg.

A ro-ro ship is a ship capable of loading (Roll-On) or unloading (Roll-Off) through a ramp by loading not only cargo with self-driving power such as passenger cars and trucks, but also trailers loaded with containers.

This vessel is the first LNG-powered ro-ro ship built in Korea. It has dimensions of 217m in length, 32.2m in width, and 27.3m in height. It can operate at a speed of 17.6 knots.

In particular, the ship is equipped with an LNG dual-fuel engine that can use both LNG and diesel as fuel, so it emits almost no sulfur oxides (SOx), so it can operate in ‘ECA (Emission Control Areas)’ such as Europe and North America.

In addition, 9% nickel steel, which can maintain excellent strength and impact toughness even at a cryogenic temperature of -163 degrees (℃), was applied to the 337 cubic meter (㎥) LNG fuel tank, and the equipment layout and design were optimized to further enhance stability.

In addition, by applying a shaft generator that can produce and supply electricity using the rotational force of the main engine, operating expenses and exhaust gas emissions were minimized. Four thrusters that support lateral propulsion were installed to improve the ship’s steering performance. Moving within a narrow port can also be done smoothly.
