A deal has been struck to release, container ship, Ever Given, from the Suez Canal.

The insurers and owners of the 400-meter long ship that had earlier blocked the Suez Canal, disrupting global trade, have eventually reached a preliminary deal with the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) to release it, according to the UK insurance group that has been assisting in leading the negotiations.

The UK’s P&I Club said that in principle an agreement had been reached that must allow the vessel to sail. It has also said that it had been collaborating with the Ever Given owner, insurance companies, and also the SCA to close a final deal.

It said that once all formalities have been satisfied, arrangements for the release will soon be made.

The container vessel blocked the canal for about a week in late March before it had been dislodged from the canal banks. The SCA had demanded a compensation claim for damage caused to the canal before it permitting the ship to resume the voyage.

The insurer, in its statement on Wednesday, did not specify the terms of the preliminary agreement. The SCA could not be immediately be reached for comment.

The ship could be permitted to continue its journey as early as the next few days.
