AMP Delivers 3.1 Million Dollars To UMIP To Contribute In The Training Of Future Professionals In The Marine, Logistics And Port Sector

The Panama Maritime Authority (AMP) delivered the sum of 3 million 100 thousand dollars to the International Maritime University of Panama (UMIP), this annual economic contribution is established in Organic Law 81 of November 8, 2012, which indicates that UMIP is responsible for the payment of ten percent (10%) of the income collected by the General Directorate of Seafarers (DGGM) of the AMP through the issuance of certifications of officers and seafarers.

The event was attended by the Minister of Education and president of the Higher Council of the UMIP, Maruja Gorday de Villalobos, also representing the Minister of Maritime Affairs, Noriel Araúz, attended the Secretary General of the AMP, Elvia Bustavino and the Director of the DGGM, Captain Juan Maltez, who, when speaking, stated that “by making this contribution, the AMP is not only complying with a law, but also supporting education, an essential factor for the growth and economic progress of the country; which contributes to the training of professionals who will go on to work in the ranks of important companies, shipping companies, government organizations and the entire maritime sector, both nationally and internationally ”.

In addition, this action is in accordance with the guidelines issued by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) related to the 2030 Agenda promoted by the United Nations (UN) through the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), specifically in the SDG 1 “End poverty in all its forms everywhere”, SDG 4 “Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all” and SDG 5 “Achieve equality among the genders and empower all women and girls ”.

The rector of the UMIP, Víctor Luna Barahona thanked the contribution, and pondered the symbiotic relationship between both instances; highlighting that the resources received will be used to comply with the guidelines for monitoring the Institutional Improvement Plans and “the new challenge that lies ahead: university reaccreditation, which we are working on through the creation of commissions that seek to reinforce our quality management system”.

Also present were the Senior Management of important Organizations such as: the Panamanian Association of Naval Officers (APOM), the National College of Seafarers (CONAGEMAR), the Panama Maritime Chamber (CMP), the Panama Shipowners Association (ARPA) and the Logistics Business Council (COEL).
