Ten Indonesian crew members had been rescued from a cargo vessel that was at risk of sinking in waters off the western coast of central Taiwan.
Coast Guard received a distress call around 6:00 a.m. that informed that a Sierra Leone-registered cargo vessel, Fu Lin 88, had run aground from a fishing port in Yunlin County, approximately 13 nautical miles offshore.
The Coast Guard has reportedly said that the vessel started tilting after water seeped into the engine room.
A 500-tonne patrol vessel had been sent to the site to pick up the crew members in three life rafts. No member had any signs of injury. The rescuers had followed safety protocols and even wore PPE when the rescue operation was on.
The foreign nationals who had been rescued were taken to a quarantine center in Kaohsiung. Following the government’s protocols, they have taken the COVID-19 test. The Coast Guard has said that they will be taken to the Centers for Disease Control Southern Regional Center later on and also to the National Immigration Agency to carry out follow-up processing.
