Anglo-Eastern, one of the largest ship management companies in the world, managing around 650 vessels has achieved an unique milestone in their Singapore tanker fleet. ‘LEGACY’ their first dual-fuel Gas Tanker is now on her maiden voyage. Anglo-Eastern has wholly managed, crewed and operated the Project. LEGACY has a number of firsts to her credit. She is the first mid-size (38,000 cbm) dual-fuel LPG carrier constructed in South Korea. LEGACY is also the first to be featured in Hyundai Mipo Dockyard’s new ‘LPG SAFE’ double-hull design.
The tanker’s MAN B&W LGIP dual-fuel engine can run on LPG and VLSFO/LSMGO, and is both NOx Tier III and EEDI Phase 3 compliant, regardless of the fuel type selected, with significant reductions in emissions when running on LPG.
LPG is considered a clean fuel in comparison with fuel oil. It reduces sulphur oxide (SOx) emissions by 99%, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 15%, nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by 10%, and particulate matter by 90%. This also gives credit towards the IMO EEDI compliance requirements.
Advantages of LPG
LPG as a marine fuel provides efficiency gains on many fronts, generating notable gains in total voyage fuel-economics, and secure LPG’s position as a long-term, sustainable marine fuel. The technology used in LEGACY can be applied in powering other types of ships. This can contribute to the IMO’s target of a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from marine transportation.
Powered by LPG, LEGACY’s engines are cleaner, cheaper to maintain, and more efficient, delivering long-term reliability, with minimal maintenance requirements.
The Legacy Continues
With successful cooperation and team work, Anglo-Eastern Technical Services (AETS) and Anglo-Eastern Ship Management (Singapore) have excelled their lead roles in this mega project, taking a significant step for a cleaner and a greener future ahead.
