Members are advised that the Marine Department of the Hong Kong Government has issued a notice regarding the Merchant Shipping (Prevention of Air Pollution) (Amendment) Regulation 2021.

The amendments, that will come into effect on 1 April 2022, impose new requirements in relation to the use of fuel oil for ships of 400 gross tonnage or above, whether engaged in international or non-international voyages, and require that ships’ in-use fuel oil sampling points shall comply with the requirements set out in MARPOL Annex VI.

These requirements are in line with the recently published club’s article on the ‘Guidelines for fuel oil sampling and designated sampling points.’ As such, members are recommended to review their fuel oil sampling procedures to ensure that samples can be drawn safely from the ship’s fuel service system in compliance with these guidelines.
