The IMO Environment Committee (MEPC) started its first meeting of the year. Over the coming week, member states must agree on how shipping will concretely reach the 40 percent climate reduction target by 2030, which is part of the IMO’s climate strategy.
From the Danish side, emphasis is placed on the negotiations reaching an agreement with reduction targets, which are in line with the targets in the IMO’s climate strategy. In continuation of this, it is also a Danish wish to start discussions on how the IMO should work further with the maritime reduction measures after 2030 and in this connection also start looking at the so-called market-based measures.
At the meeting, the committee will also consider a proposal for a global research and development fund funded by industry. Denmark supports the establishment of such a fund, which will help pave the way for the necessary research and development in green solutions for shipping.
The Environment Committee meeting will take place virtually from 10 June to 17 June.
