Two ex-employees of Shell had been involved in the theft of over 300,000 mt of Marine Gasoil (MGO) from the refinery of Pulau Bukom. On Monday, they have been ordered jail sentences.

Muhammad Ashraf Hamzah, who was a former gas safety tester, has been sentenced to nine and a half years of imprisonment. In January, he had pleaded guilty to nine criminal breaches of trust counts that had involved gas oil worth over $18 million. This included a single charge of taking $200,000 of the criminal proceeds for buying a car.

Sadagoban Premnath, a panel operator or a fieldman, has received a jail sentence for six years and eight months, after pleading guilty to four charges of conspiracy to mishandle MGO.

Cases against the other alleged offenders of the Shell case are ongoing. Shell had alerted the police about the loss of MGO in 2017. Any individual encountering criminal breach of trust charges may be fined and also imprisoned for up to 15 years.
