The family of missing Indian Seafarer Pankaj Kumar has sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention in the matter. Mr. Kumar has been missing from 6 September 2021. The family has previously tried getting in touch with the local MP but has not yet received a response.
Pankaj hailed from Chaunta village in Gurudaspur district of Punjab. He was the second engineer and had been employed on MV Tampen, a merchant vessel.

Before leaving for the UAE, Pankaj had called and informed his family that he would be in touch whenever he would get a mobile network. However, he didn’t.

Pankaj’s younger brother had received a call on 6 September from the shipping company. He was informed that while the ship was sailing to the UAE from Cameroon, it had been attacked by pirates. He was also informed that two crew members have suffered injuries while his brother was nowhere to be found.

Since Pankaj’s brother has received the call, he has tried approaching every source possible. But none has been of help. As a result, he approached the Prime Minister.

Pankaj, who is 30 now, married two years back. He had reached Mumbai on 29 January during a four-month contract with the shipping company. The contract had been extended per work requirements.

A local human rights activist has taken the case to several platforms and has also written to India’s foreign minister. However, there has been no response from the ministry of external affairs.
