In a peerless collaboration, MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company and Shell International Petroleum Company have agreed to work together for accelerating the decarbonization of the global maritime sector.
This long-duration agreement will help MSC and Shell in gaining more effective and productive access to new innovative technologies and fuel solutions. This will enhance their role in the energy transformation of the shipping sector.
With this memorandum of understanding, the companies will focus on the overall development of safe, sustainable, and competitive technologies. This will contribute to reducing the emission from existing assets and supports the net-zero future of shipping.
Mr. Bud Darr, EVP Maritime Policy and Government Affairs, MSC Group commented, “To reach that ultimate goal of complete decarbonization, we must look at a set of solutions. We need significant advances in research and development and fuel development. MSC welcomes partnerships like this with Shell that are designed to facilitate cross-sector information sharing and prove how collaboration is key in defining the best pathway to a net-zero future.”
MSC and Shell technical and commercial teams will collaborate to evolve and deploy alternative technologies and fuels, including fuel cells for achieving their net-zero emissions. The team will also work with digital platforms and services for promoting an appreciable engagement of industry stakeholders.
Shell President, Melissa Williams said, “Shell wants to play a central role in the transition to net-zero. Partnering with our customers to develop new technologies and fuels will help accelerate progress. Combining MSC’s experience as one of the world’s largest shipping companies with Shell’s expertise as a global energy supplier will help bring about effective solutions for this vital part of the world economy.”
The partners claimed that they foreknow the range of fuel solutions on the way to net-zero future and exploring alternatives like hydrogen-derived fuel and methanol as key to the rising issues. MSC is also planning the opportunities to use LNG in its fleet. The companies also assured the exploration of the methane-slip abatement technologies for future pathways.
