A civilian vessel rescued six Indonesian crewmen after theirs had capsized Wednesday, the Malaysian Marine Department has reported. The department had on Wednesday received a distress call regarding a ship capsizing.

In their statement published on 23 September, the department announced that strong winds had forced the MV Ocean Serene to the port side. As a result, water seeped in through the ship’s transom around 7.30 pm.

Pumps had been used but were unsuccessful in removing the water that had been rapidly flowing into the ship. As a result, the ship became submerged.

The six crew members from Indonesia had abandoned the ship and were finally rescued by a civilian vessel that was in that area.

The department has sent out ships deployed to the area to monitor oil spills and movements of the sunken vessel.

The department is planning to send out a special marker buoy to ensure that other ships avoid the route. A team has been formed to investigate the cause of this incident.
