Brazilian ports throughput were up 9.4% in the first half of the year from a year ago, port regulator Antaq reported on Thursday (12). According to the agency, the organized ports and authorized and leased terminals handled 591.9 million tonnes over the period, the Waterway Statistics panel of Antaq said.
Solid bulk cargo was up 6.4%, liquid bulk cargo 11.6%, containers 16.3%, and breakbulk cargo 19.1%. Brazilian ports handled 343.2 million tonnes of solid bulk cargo, accounting for 58% of the total weight handled, especially iron ore at 171.8 million tonnes, up 12% from a year ago. Oil came second, up 8% to 97.2 million tonnes.
According to the panel, the port that stood out the most was Vitória (pictured), Espírito Santo, posting a 30.6% growth in the first half of the year to 3.7 million tonnes.
According to Antaq, Brazilian ports are expected to handle 626 million tonnes in the second half of the year. For 2021, the estimate is 1.218 billion tonnes. If the prospect comes true, ports throughput will climb 5.5% from last year.
