Russian investigators have recently launched extensive searches at the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (CPC) following Saturday’s marine oil spill near the Black Sea port of Novorossiisk. The investigative committee’s regional branch spoke of this investigation on Thursday.

Russia initiated a criminal investigation on Saturday’s spill that occurred while loading a tanker moored to a floating jetty (offshore). Per the CPC, a crucial part of the jetty had broken, leading to the accident.

In connection to the criminal case, the Investigative Committee representatives have been interviewing employees of the CPC and examining all documents. The consortium is providing necessary assistance to the appointed investigation team.

A consortium, including Russia’s LUKARCO B.V., Kazakh KazMunayGas, Transneft, Chevron Caspian Pipeline Consortium Company, and other firms owns the CPC.

The dedicated pipeline of CPC delivers Kazakh crude export oil blend to a terminal located near Novorossiisk. The CPC has said that the terminal has been operating as usual.

Russia initiated the investigation after scientists had said that the spill spread over an area of more than 80 square kilometers and was larger than had been initially estimated by the CPC.

Moscow has been insisting that Russian enterprises take on added responsibility and stringent measures for accidents that may pose an ecological threat after last year’s fuel leak. The incident was the worst environmental disaster in the Arctic of this century.

Metals miner Nornickel had to pay $2 billion in damages for the leakage. Russia’s state fisheries agency has still been claiming $800 million more from it in the court.
