The world’s biggest container vessel has reached the UK on its maiden voyage. The Ever Ace had been built last year for Evergreen Marine, a shipping company based in Taiwan. On Sunday morning, Ever Ace was docked in Suffolk.

The vessel, whose sister ship Ever Given resulted in mass disruption to global trade when it had run aground and wedged in the Suez Canal in March, weighs about 23,579 tons and is 400m-long and 61.5m in width.

On Wednesday, Ever Ace – with a capacity of about 23,992 containers – is expected to set sail for Rotterdam before passing through the Suez Canal. The Ever Ace arrived at Suffolk from Hamburg after departing from China in August.

Felixstowe had welcomed the MSC Gulson about two years ago. Even though almost identical to the Ever Ace in terms of size, it can carry about 28 fewer containers.

The Ever Given was eventually freed after it had been stuck in the Suez Canal for almost a week when it had set sail to Felixtowe. The rescue operation was undertaken to free the Ever Given from the canal after it had caused a backlog that had delayed the journey of at least a few hundred ships, compelling them to choose a longer route.

Owing to the massive chaos caused, the Ever Given had been held by the Egyptian authorities for several months. The vessel owner Shoei Kisen Kaisha negotiated hard about who would cover the cost of blocking the crucial shipping lane for almost a week in March. The Ever Given was eventually released in the first week of July after the two sides reached a confidential settlement.
