The Global Industry Alliance to Support Low Carbon Shipping (Low Carbon GIA) is a public-private partnership, established under the framework of the IMO-Norway GreenVoyage2050 Project, that aims to bring together maritime industry leaders to support an energy efficient and low carbon maritime transport system.
As part of our involvement with the IMO, MarineTraffic are delighted to announce that a free online course, The Energy Efficient Ship Operation, is now available.
Minglee Hoe, Project Technical Analyst at the IMO’s Department of Partnerships, said:
Climate change is something that affects us all, whether onboard a ship or on land. We all need to do our bit to reduce our environmental footprint. This course is designed to be simple and accessible. It contains practical information on how people onboard ships can contribute to improvements in the energy efficiency of ships, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to the mitigation of climate change. Knowledge is power and we hope that the whole industry benefits from free access to this course.
The course is primarily aimed at seafarers. However, it will also be appealing to anyone in the maritime community who has an interest in how this issue of GHG emissions from ships can be addressed.
The course features videos, text information and quizzes. All modules also include interactive lessons, resources for additional learning as well as a final summary. The course is specifically designed to be accessible to non-technical audiences.
There are currently two modules, which each take approximately one hour to complete.
Module 1
‘Greenhouse gases and energy efficiency in the maritime industry’ covers IMO’s regulatory framework to address GHG emissions from ships, particularly the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) and the Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) under MARPOL Annex VI.
Module 2
‘Practical ways of reducing energy use at sea’ focuses on the operational measures that can be included in the SEEMP Part I (trim optimisation, voyage planning, maintenance of engines etc.) and which can contribute to improvements in the energy efficiency of ships, thereby reducing GHG emissions.
A certificate of completion is awarded to learners who successfully complete the course assessments.
MarineTraffic Partner Argyris Stasinakis said:
‘The Energy Efficient Ship Operation’ course was designed to inspire and empower professionals in achieving a lower emissions footprint, while minimising costs for their organisations. The content includes comprehensive theoretical insight as well as clear practical steps that can be applied to real-world conditions.
As a provider of independent, reliable and global data on vessel movements, MarineTraffic is delighted to be playing its part in supporting the shipping industry’s drive towards a cleaner and more efficient future.
MarineTraffic offers subscribers a port congestion tool, which covers every major global port and can be used for more efficient planning and scheduling by ship operators, writing clauses and pricing for charter party agreements, comparison between ports and driving port operators themselves to enhance their operations.
