Britain’s greenest cruise ship had departed for her maiden voyage from Southampton. Iona is not simply a much-hyped mega-cruise vessel. She is one of the most environmentally friendly and technologically advanced cruise ships in the world.
The P&O Cruises Iona had set sail on Saturday at around 9 pm. Constructed at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Germany, Iona is the first British liner that is fuelled by liquefied natural gas. The P&O president Paul Ludlow has said that this feature rewards it as Britain’s greenest cruise ship.
P&O Cruises Iona’s fascinating design boasts a two-deck glass SkyDome. Throughout Saturday, guests had been excited to be on board the vessel. For many of these visitors, it was their first holiday after months since the coronavirus pandemic had begun.
Passengers onboard can enjoy chart-topping singles from Tony Hadley, renowned English singer-songwriter. They will also be able to engross themselves in spectacular aerial shows in the ship’s glass-domed SkyDome.
Iona can accommodate about 5,200 passengers. Guests can devour meals at 17 different restaurants on it. Of these, eight are known for their specialty dining and 12 for their bars, including the first gin distillery at sea.
The ship is built in a way that it reduces the vessel’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 25%, nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by 90%, and 100% in the case of sulfur (SO2).
