Importers and marine officials are left worried over the sudden disappearance of the Panama flag bearing vessel MV Tan Binh 127. The vessel was travelling from Vietnam to Chattogram port and carried 11,000 tonnes steel worth of Tk110 crore.

The cargo vessel was supposed to reach Chattogram port on August 4. However, on its route, it went missing somewhere near the Myanmar coast. Its been a month since the vessel disappeared, and both ship owners and local agents are clueless and worried.

Also, the mystery of the sudden vanishing is making importers in Bangladesh severely worried. As a result, the importers handed over documents to the Chattogram Custom House to enable customs clearance of all goods aboard the cargo vessel.

The Myanmar Navy, on August 3, stated the master of Tan Binh vessel declared abandoned at 90 nautical miles towards the west side of Myanmar coast. Eighteen crew sailors of the vessel were immediately by sailors of another container vessel MCC Chittagong. As per the last real-time vessel movement data, the vessel MV Tan Binh 127 was last in Malacca Straits that connects to the Andaman Sea.

Tanmoy Metal Industries Limited of Keraniganj had 519 metric tons of steel onboard the MV Tan Bin 127.

The MD of Tanmoy Metal Industries Limited, Ratan Kumar Banik, stated, ‘The vessel was carrying 11,000 metric tons of steel that is worth Tk110 crore. The steel belonged to several different importers. Local shipping agent Haque and Sons Ltd is providing inaccurate information. The vessel is supposedly abandoned by crew members. I am even unable to claim any insurance as the shipowner hasn’t declared the vessel as sunken. It is leading to severe production issues and financial losses at our end.’

Senior operations officer at Haque And Sons Ltd, Matiul Islam, stated, ‘The owner of the vessel Vietnamese company Tan Binh Company Ltd isn’t providing any updated news or declaration of the ship. Despite attempts at connecting with ship owners from the past one month, we are not getting any information or responses from their end.’

The vessel was also carrying goods for Sujan Enterprise of Hajibagh, Dhaka. Moazzem Hossain, the owner of Sujan Enterprise, stated, ‘We have already paid the price of imported goods to the Korean supplier, but haven’t received any products yet.’

The VP of Bangladesh Iron and Steel Merchants Association, Amir Hossain Nur Ali, stated, ‘Neither the owner nor the local agent is giving accurate or updated information about the ship, whether it has sunk or not. The entire episode is of great concern for all importers and steel traders and they are facing acute financial losses.’
