World’s Largest Offshore Wind Farm To Be Operational By 2022, Work In Full Swing

Hornsea Two’s reactive compensation station and offshore substation sailing away to the UK North Sea

Construction work is underway at what is going to be the biggest offshore wind farm in the world. The two offshore wind farms are located 50 miles away from the Yorkshire Coast of England in the North Sea. The wind farm is expected to begin service by 2022 and will possess a capacity of 1.4 GW.

Semborp Marine recently assembled the upper units in Singapore for both the wind fields. Its work includes an offshore substation and reactive compensation station.

The two units departed Singapore on August 15 on a heavy lift vessel and will reach the United Kingdom by September end. On reaching the UK, the units will be assembled with their jackets that were installed in October 2020.

Patrick Harnett, Senior Programme Director for Orsted stated, “This is a very exciting milestone for Hornsea Two. We are eagerly awaiting the wind farm to be operational by 2022. The wind farm will be the largest offshore wind farm in the world and will lead the way for brighter renewable energy projects in future. This would have a remarkable impact on the mission to reach net-zero.”

The construction work at the installation site is making bigger progress. The first turbine came into being at the site in May 2021, marking a key milestone. The turbines have been manufactured at Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy’s blade factory and include the new 265-foot-long blades.

Reports state that as of mid-August 2020, 50 turbines now stand in position. The completed assemblage will have a total of 165 8MW Siemens turbines standing 656 feet tall above sea level. These turbines will have a rotor diameter of 578 feet.
